        Wheat is a minor food crop of the State and occupies an average annual area of 4200.00 Ha. The crop is grown mainly in the plain areas of Garo Hills Districts and the sonalika variety has become quite popular with the farmers of these areas.

        Out of the total average foodgrain area of 132420 Ha. in the State, wheat occupies only 3.17% of the total cropped area producing an annual average of 23150 Metric Tons with an annual average yield of 1492.64 Kg /Ha during 1990-91 to 2000-01. There was no increase in area under wheat during the this period but there was marginal increase in average production and average annual growth rate of a little over 2%.
